Visit Filming Locations From Twisters

The heart of El Reno’s historic downtown between Russell and Woodson St. became the setting for a local farmer’s market, which sees one of the film’s most explosive tornado sequences. Flying debris nods to the local scenery, ranging from the community’s Heritage Express Trolley to oil derricks, and a collapsing water tower, which through digital “movie magic” was relocated to this area. The production even painted a custom mural for the film, which can be seen on the northwest corner of Bickford and Woodson on the JKM Jewelry Gifts & Locksmith building.

Annual Fried Onion Burger Day Festival

A tribute to the popular fried onion hamburgers that have been cooked daily in diners and cafes throughout El Reno since the early 1900s.  Visitors from around the world converge in El Reno each year to witness the cooking of the world’s largest fried onion hamburger, weighing in at over 750 lbs.

An all-American event, the El Reno Fried Onion Burger Day Festival traces its origins back to Ross Davis, who owned and operated the Hamburger Inn on Route 66 in downtown El Reno.  During the Depression, when onions were cheap but meat was expensive, Davis began adding shredded onion to five-cent meat patties in order to make the burgers look bigger.  What resulted on the grill of the Hamburger Inn was a hamburger with a tremendous amount of flavor and the birth of a local tradition and delicacy.

El Reno's Annual Small Town Weekend

Bring the family to a weekend of festivities during El Reno’s Small Town Weekend celebration. Held rain or shine, this event will cruise into town this June to celebrate everything nostalgic on the local strip of Route 66. Numerous events will be held throughout the weekend, from the burnout on Route 66 to a city-wide cruise and an open car show. This event will also be filled with children’s activities, festival food, vendors, live entertainment and more.

The weekend kicks off on Friday with an all-day swap meet. On Saturday, head out to the car show to admire classic and modified cars, among other sleek vehicles. A closed route cruise on Route 66 in the evening closes out the day’s events with more events lined up for Sunday. Bring the whole family out for this memorable Mother Road experience.
